Giving Back is a national program that offers free dental care to low-income and uninsured children. Annually, on the first Friday in February, dentists across the country donate their time and supplies to educate children on the importance of oral hygiene. The purpose of the event is to provide necessary dental care and increase awareness of the ongoing challenges these children face in accessing quality dental care.
This is the second year that JLD has had the privilege of participating in this event. Volunteers had the important job of entertaining the children with games and crafts while they waited for their turn in the dentist's chair. It was a fun and rewarding event for everyone involved. Watching the kids show off their fresh, clean teeth and new toothbrushes left a lasting impression on the JLD volunteers.
Special thanks to Dr. Makala Hubbell, JLD member (Holiday Mart Ticket Sales Chair) and owner of Lowry Family Dentistry, for sponsoring the event. Lowry Family Dentistry is committed to educating patients on the importance of preventative dental care as a key component to one's overall health and well being.

The program, "Smile Insurance" is a preventative dental health program for children. "Dental treatment is an excellent investment in an individual's health and well-being" voices Dr. Hubbell. "Lowry Denstist Sees all Smiles" Living Well in Lowry - Feb 2008

Even more unfortunate is the simple truth that tooth decay is an easily preventable condition. However, it continues to be the leading chronic disease among children. Recent studies reveal that 1 in 4 children have untreated tooth decay and an estimated 7.8 million hours of school are lost each year due to oral pain and infections.
In an effort to reduce the negative impact of poor oral health, Lowry Family Dentistry will be participating in Give Kids A Smile®. On Friday, February 1st, uninsured and disadvantaged children across the nation will receive free dental care. The program is designed not only to provide much needed dental care to underserved populations, but also to highlight the ongoing challenges they face when trying to obtain quality care.
In an effort to meet the dental needs of Lowry residents, Lowry Family Dentistry has taken the initiative to expand this program and will provide free dental care to uninsured and disadvantaged children on Friday, February 1st and Saturday, February 2nd. Dental care is provided at no charge and includes examinations, x-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatments, restorations, and emergency services.
The Give Kids a Smile® program is a perfect fit for Dr. Makala Hubbell of Lowry Family Dentistry. She attended the University of Oklahoma obtaining both a dental degree and an advanced degree in public health. With her background and training, prevention of dental disease and patient education are important components of her dental practice.
Her dental career began in rural Oklahoma where she was the only dentist in an entire county. As a general dentist, she had the rewarding experience of working with both adults and children with limited access to quality dental care. She often was the first dentist most of these patients had ever seen! She also had the opportunity to see firsthand the challenges faced by the uninsured and disadvantaged when obtaining dental care.
In 2004 she moved with her husband to Colorado. By chance, they stumbled upon Lowry and immediately came to love the community atmosphere. They have been lucky enough to establish a home and a business in the neighborhood.
Lowry Family Dentistry was established in the fall of 2006. The office is family friendly featuring a comfortable waiting area and a luxurious patient amenities bar. Each treatment room is equipped with the most modern dental technologies including digital radiographs, intra-oral cameras, lasers, and patient entertainment video screens. Her dental office has received national recognition by the American Institute of Architects for its design and unique details.
Dr. Hubbell is excited to call Lowry home. She felt Lowry would be perfect for a general dentistry clinic where she could see patients of all ages. After working in downtown Denver, Dr. Hubbell is very happy to renew her focus on family dentistry.
Dr. Hubbell is a member of the American Dental Association, Colorado Dental Society, and Metro Denver Dental Society where she serves on the Access to Care Committee. She regularly volunteers her time providing patient education to school age children.
